The initiation of collaborative research involving investigators in developing and developed nations is a complex task.
Four key areas to consider in collaborative, international research studies are discussed : administrative concerns, resources, understanding the research design, and problem solving.
An example of a successful, international collaborative study of dementia in Ibadan, Nigeria is presented.
Factors contributing to the successful outcome are detailed.
