This paper is concerned with the development of the facilitator role in primary care.
It describes a project which sought to use models of facilitation and project development used in industry to build support for the role of a primary care facilitator.
Key elements included : (a) the identification of « stakeholders » in primary care to involve them in planning and encourage their ownership of the facilitator initiative ; (b) a consultative survey of 37 local primary care teams, using practice visits and a written questionnaire.
