The Public Health Service's Expert Panel on the Content of Prenatal Care Report in 1989 provided detailed guidelines for the components of each prenatal visit.
However, the extent to which women were receiving the recommended care when the guidelines were being formulated has yet to be determined.
The 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey results permit an examination of the proportion of women who reported receiving some of the recommended procedures.
