Implementing point-of-care testing.
To provide an overview of point-of-care testing (POCT) procedures and instrumentation.
Author's knowledge and current literature.
The role of the laboratory in POCT must be one of leadership.
Current technology, patient needs, and physician concerns mandate a pro-active approach by the laboratory in ancillary-site testing.
This is best accomplished as a joint venture between laboratory personnel and health care providers.
To implement an ancillary-site testing program, the laboratory must include a team of key personnel from nursing, hospital administration, medical staff, and other nonlaboratory departments.
