    Data Synthesis

Streptococcus pyogenes can cause serious, even fatal, diseases.

Throughout most of the twentieth century, a general decline in the severity and the incidence of conditions such as scarlet fever and rheumatic fever has been documented.

Since the mid- 1980s, however, there has been a resurgence of serious diseases attributed to group A streptococcus.

Clusters of rheumatic fever cases, invasive and bacteremic infections, and a toxic shock-like syndrome having high morbidity and mortality have been described.
