Gateway Rehabilitation Center, the largest addiction treatment center in Western Pennsylvania, struggled with the questions of nicotine dependence for many years.
It developed what was thought to be a comprehensive nicotine treatment program and became totally smoke free on October 2, 1989.
The following narrative describes Gateway's rationale and plan to become smoke free, the reasons for their « retreat », and their continued efforts to address nicotine dependence.
