The article describes briefly the development of the learning disability movement in the United States, beginning in 1800 and continuing to the present.
The discussion has three parts.
The first part deals with the foundations phase and focuses on ideas that contributed tot eh theoretical basis that preceded, and actually made possible, the formation of the LD movement.
The second part, the early years of the field, deals with events that established LD as a specific area of study and contributed to its growth from 1963 to around 1990.
The third part provides a brief glimpse into to the future.
