The aim of this study was to assess the radiological hazard to the Polish population due to coal combustion for electric power production.
The activity concentrations of elementary radionuclides in fly ashes from ten power plants were measured.
The ATMO computer program was applied to calculate the annual increase of activity concentration in the air and of annual increase of activity fallout on the ground.
Exposure by inhalation, oral ingestion and external irradiation was taken into account.
The assessed values of individual dose equivalent for the critical group is 0.1 mSv per year, i.e. 4% of the total dose rate from natural radiation.
