The original intent of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training Program was the education of health professionals in the skills and knowledge needed for a successful resuscitation. 1 To this end, the American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the American Red Cross (ARC), the American College of Cardiology, the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other health organizations sponsored the development of a set of national guidelines and recommendations for the delivery of emergency cardiac care (ECC).
