    The former German Democratic Republic (GDR, 108 333 km2, 16 709 000 inhabitants) has been one of the European Countries with the highest degree of environmental pollution.

    For instance, a total od 7,6 mill. inhabitants have been supplied with drinking water not corresponding the official quality standards.

    An enormous output of SO2 and dust has caused long-term exceeding of the legally prescribed Maximum Immission Concentration (MIC values) and frequent smog situations, especially in industnal areas.
