Time-limited certification and recertification : the program of the American board of internal medicine : the task force on recertification.
After more than 20 years of discussion and debate, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) decided in December 1986 to join 17 other specialty boards by limiting the duration of validity for all certificates it issued.
This policy has been in effect since 1987 for Geriatric Medicine and 1988 for Critical Care Medicine and will involve all certificates issued in 1990 and there-after.
