Health service research and the future of Australian psychiatry.
What do psychiatrists do?
Are they effective in comforting, relieving and curing the sick?
Is Australia getting value for money from the psychiatric profession?
These were the questions being asked in the early eighties . It is my intention to use data from health services research circa 1987 to describe the current position in Australia, compare it briefly with that in some other countries, and make some minor comments about likely developments in the next decade.
