Traduction en anglais : Glue spraying in the upholstered furniture industry : presentation of a wholistic approach to improve work conditions.
Solvent-based glue spraying involves a health risk to workers from possible solvent exposure.
The possibility of reducing this health risk was studied in the furniture upholstery industry.
Questionnaire, occupational hygienic and ergonomic surveys were carried out to assess the work conditions, and thereafter the solvent-based glue was substituted with a water-based form.
A dense aerosol appeared during the use of the water-based substitute, and therefore the amounts of fresh air and exhaust air should be adjustable if such glues are used.
When chemical substitution is implemented as means of decreasing a health risk, a new risk assessment is needed.
In the case of water-based glues, there is the possibility of exposure to natural resins that can sensitize the skin and respiratory tract.
The concept of an interdisciplinary approach to workplace improvement should receive more emphasis in the future.
