  1. EGS4 Monte Carlo simulation of a 90° geometry polarized X-ray fluorescence system.

    A Monte Carlo model with a flexible geometry has been developed to aid the design of a 90° geometry polarized X-ray fluorescence system for the measurement of Cadmium concentration in deep body organs such as the kidney.

    Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the EGS4 Monte Carlo code system.

    The results show that Cadmium concentrations between 4 to 30 mug/g kidney tissue can be detected easily for distances between the skin and the kidney surface of 30-70 mm respectively.

    The mean skin dose during such a measurement is 9 mGy.

    The polarized X-ray system is more advantageous than the conventional isotope sources as far as the reduction of scattered radiation is concerned.
