This paper underlines the usefulness of public health approaches to programme planning and evaluation in the field of psychiatry.
The use of these approaches is illustrated by an assessment of the public health importance of depressive disorders and by a review of public health criteria for the evaluation of treatment interventions in psychiatry.
The author stresses that the use of public health approaches in psychiatry is necessary because it will help in national planning and in increasing the priority which the authorities and the general public give to mental health programmes.
