A scoring system has been developed to help prioritize asbestos remedial works.
It forms part of an asbestos management system which has been built around a computer-based asbestos register designed to contain comprehensive details of all asbestos elements identified in buildings.
The scoring system takes account of a material's asbestos content, condition, vulnerability, accessibility, proximity, the groups of people which may be affected as a result of their contact with airborne asbestos fibres arising from the material, and their contact time.
The management system allows remediation works to be highlighted and tracked.
One of several report writing facilities developed provides a summary of asbestos elements and their location in a building stock, which may need to be taken into account to protect workers carrying out other work in the buildings.
The system has been applied to a pilot study of some 600 council properties in the City of Westminster.
