    Dangers to health of employees caused by biological agents in archives, depositories and magazines (ADM) were investigated throughout Thueringia.

    The project was subdivided into collecting data about workplaces, determination of atmospheric concentrations of moulds, determination of medically important germs, followed by sanitation of mould-contaminated ADM and preventions of recontamination with moulds, as well as information about the effects of moulds on human health and possibilities of sanitation.

    Most of the investigated archives were highly contaminated with moulds.

    Aspergillus was the dominant genus.

    The main causes for contamination with fungi are damages to the buildings (e.g. moisture in the walls) and climatic indoor conditions, which support growth and development of fungi.

    The studies demonstrate, that danger to health increases due to direct handling of contaminated files or any other activities in archives.

    It is possible to minimize the danger by realizing decrees concerning the protection of labour.
