Traduction en anglais : Promoting practical medical training before the final examination.
The « practical year » is the first part of practical training before the final medical examination : it includes 16 weeks each in Internal Medicine, Surgery and one optional subject.
It was established within the German six-year medical curriculum for training the students to cope with daily clinical demands during their medical education.
The practical year should prepare them for daily activities on the ward before they start the second part of their practical training ( « Arzt im Praktikum ») for another 18 months after the final examination.
The practical year should motivate and enthuse the students and help them choose a speciality.
During a two-year pilot period 1994-1996 we established a contract-based, problem-oriented curriculum for the practical year in the Department of Neurology at the Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus Herdecke, Universität Witten/Herdecke, In 1997 this curriculum was introduced at Park-Klinik Weissensee, Humboldt-Universität Berlin.
This paper describes the problem-oriented contract-learning curriculum for the practical year which may be transferable to other subjects and institutions.
