Traduction en anglais : Curriculum and quality standards : Evaluation of a traditional and an alternative medical curriculum.
Traditional medical curricula are widely criticized for their lack of practical relevance and neglect of psychosocial aspects and issues of general medicine.
Motivation and satisfaction of medical students can be promoted by alternative problem-oriented curricula, which try to provide a relevant and integrated medical education.
A study with preclinical medical students in a traditional university (Göttingen, n=126) and an alternative medical curriculum (Witten/Herdecke, n=25) was carried out concerning the evaluation of structure and goals of their curricula, motivation and practical relevance.
Students in the problem-oriented faculty describe a programme placing more emphasis on patient contacts and integrated case-oriented learning.
Their motivation and satisfaction is much better and so is their psychological feeling of well-being.
