Traduction en anglais : Reorganisation of the study of medicine in Germany 1953-1959.
1. After the last world war, received a travel grant to become acquainted with medical education methods in USA, due to connections with the Rockefeller Foundation.
The journey took place in 1963.
I was accompanied by Prof.
Schoen. 2. Differences in teaching were striking between USA and Germany : First of all in practical training, but also in regard to flexibility of planning, joint lectures were common in USA performed by representatives of the special fields relating to the same object, e.g. the heart.
The dominance of german full professors was unknown. 3. Based on a comprehensive study of Schaefer and Schoen, the west-german assembly of medical schools appointed in 1955 a coordinating commission to propose reforms of medical education.
Some medical schools enforced the dissolution of this organisation by 1959.
Reform then shifted to the medical associations of the country.
The critique put forward by the medical schools was based on the assumption that the reforms would undermine the classical Humboldt concept of german universities.
