Traduction en anglais : Four year course in "basic Medical skills" : A case report.
The Institute for Medical Education and Student Affairs (IfAS) has implemented a two-week course in basic clinical skills that has become an essential part of the curriculum of third year medical students at the University of Münster, Germany.
The students are trained in groups of six under the guidance of student tutors and supervision of residents.
The course goal is to prepare the students for their first clinical patient encounter.
It comprises theoretical lessons and practical training in history taking and communication skills, physical examination and basic clinical skills (e.g. blood taking, urethral catheder, gastric tubes etc.), partly supported by the use of standardised patients.
Evaluation of this programme by student self-evaluation questionnaires indicated a very high degree of satisfaction with the course and an increase in confidence in all subjects taught. « To study the phenomena of diseases without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to the sea at all (Sir William Osler). ».
