Traduction en anglais : Air pollution for aerosol in urban area.
Are reported the results of medium-term studies made by ENEA about physic and toxicologic characterization of atmospheric particulate in Bologna urban area and the historic series of data concentration of Suspended Total Particles (STP), obtained by control system of air quality, Automatic System for Environment data Survey (SARA Network), division of Environment and Prevention Regional Enterprise of Bologna.
ENEA has valued, by suggested model in ICRP publication n°66, pulmonic deposition for fraction of atmospheric particulate from 16 to 0.018 mum and, by Ames test, the mutagenic activity associated to atmospheric particulate fractions from 9 to 0.4 mum.
The analysis has pointed out that the 90% of aerosol in alveolar area is due to particles smaller than 2.5 mum and the 85% of mutagenic activity is linked to fraction of atmospheric particulate lower than 1.1 mum.
SARA network data have also pointed out that STP parameter shows, in monthly medium values, a light negative trend, whereas in daily values, even if limits fixed by laws are never exceeded, it always results very high.
This makes aero-suspended particles in Bologna urban area a critic parameter.
Consequently, it is necessary to value the real health risk for the population, either at medium or long term, by physic, chemical and toxicologic characterization of the fraction of atmospheric particulate lower than 2.5 pm.
