Over the past decade, there has been an emergence of interest in complementary and alternative medicine among many Western nations.
It has been estimated that about 30% to 40% of Americans use various alternative therapies for many illnesses. 1,2 A similar prevalence has been reported in the United Kingdom. 3 One estimate of the financial impact is that more than $13 billion is spent annually on complementary and alternative techniques in the United States alone.4.
