This paper describes the experiences of initiating and developing a coherent programme of research and development in cardiac rehabilitation.
It charts the evolution of the research programme from its origins in a few small scale studies and sets the context in which this research was carried out.
The paper goes on to describe the valuable lessons learned in undertaking clinical research, such as serving an apprenticeship, receiving supervision and working as a member of a team.
Finally, the paper, in acknowledging the importance of research training, shows how this has culminated in the author leading and managing a programme of research, bringing together a research team, disseminating and implementing research and collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines.
