Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards caused by dangerous substances, also known as « Seveso-II » Directive, was adopted by the European Council on December 1996.
The member states of the European Community shall bring into force the Directive not later than February 1999.
Some innovative aspects of the Directive are discussed.
In particular, this paper focuses on the effects of the new criteria for the identification of establishments to which the Directive obligations will apply and for land use planning in the vicinity of the establishments.
