Academic general pediatric divisions can function as effective primary care providers in a managed care environment.
Residents training in these programs are expected to be better equipped to enter a work environment that is increasingly structured in a managed care format.
Positive and negative consequences of managed care in an academic setting are discussed.
Recommendations for successful implementation of resident training in the world of managed care are shared.
