This article describes developments in health policy for older people in Hong Kong.
The proportion of older people in the population is growing, but services to meet their needs are not well developed.
Health promotion services, for example, are rare, with most initiatives concentrating on disease treatment and detection.
We describe one health care initiative for older people, which began in 1989 at the St James'Settlement.
It incorporates a range of health promotion services, including screening and advice.
Participants are invited to become'health ambassadors'in their community, and it is hoped that the centre will become a model for others opening in the future in Hong Kong.
