    The determination of respirable asbestos fibres in workplace air is based on a method approved by the German Berufsgenossenschaften ; this method uses a scanning electron microscopy (method ZH 1/120.46).

    The criteria laid down in this method to identify asbestos fibres, however, do not suffice for the determination of asbestos fibres in dusts, generated by quarrying and further treatment of rocks.

    Additional criteria should therefore be available.

    The paper contains an overview of asbestos minerals and typical minerals of potentially asbestos-containing rocks and their usual range of chemical composition.

    The data have been collected with respect to both the natural variability or the mixed crystal growth of certain minerals and the relatively imprecise of results of EDX-based analyses of the chemical composition under these special measurement conditions.

    Using these data it was possible to establish a catalogue of criteria which helps distinguish asbestos minerals from other minerals by referring to the chemical composition.

    To allow an efficient use of this data-collection, the criteria catalogue was transferred into a Microsoft EXCEL-sheet.
