Formal and informal care of people with psychiatric disorders : Historical perspectives and current trends.
1 Historically, the relationship between formal and informal caregivers of individuals with serious mental illness has been characterized by tension and conflict. 2 Active collaboration between formal and informal systems of care has been advocated.
Despite progress in developing collaborative relationships, collaboration often is advocated in principle, but is not always practiced. 3 Attributes and actions needed by nurses to develop truly collaborative relationships with families and other informal community resources are identified.
