This is the last in a series of three articles on the development of standards for geologic disposal of radioactive waste presented in this issue of Radioactive Waste Management and Environmental Restoration.
The principles, strategies, and procedures defined in the previous two articles are applied to the development of new radiologic standards for a disposal system not covered by any existing regulations, and to the modification of an existing set of regulations.
Subseabed disposal was chosen for the systematic development of a new set of standards, and proposed alternatives to modify existing U.S. regulations for terrestrial mined geologic repositories were evaluated.
The concluding discussion covers some standards development principles that the two exercises illustrate.
