  1. Effect of sewage irrigation on nitrate and oxalate contents in three leafy vegetable crops.

    The effect of different types of sewage used for irrigation in addition to the nitrogen fertilizers on the nitrate and oxalate content of spinach, amaranth and radish foliage, grown along the railway tracks in Bombay has been studied.

    Under the sewage irrigation on an average the NO3-N content was in the range of 230 mg to 320 mg 100-1g (dry weight), and the total oxalates were between 190 mg to 3.0 g 100-1g (dry weight).

    These were higher than the recommended values for an adult human being.
