Previously uncollated data on public sector expenditure on mental health services in the Western Cape are presented.
Total mental health expenditure in the Western Cape for 1992/93 was estimated to be in the region of R276 million.
Department of Health expenditure on mental health was R148 million, which represented 8% of the health budget and 54% of total expenditure on mental health in the Western Cape.
Serious disparities in unit costs between psychiatric institutions and general hospitals were identified.
Inequities in the provision of disability grants for blacks point to the need for improved accessibility of services for blacks.
A more adequate information system at administrative and service points, as well as more budgetary and accounting detail are essential for planning and transparency.
