Encefalopatia espongiforme bovina.
Traduction en anglais : Bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
In this contribution to a Round Table about « Spongiform Encephalopathies » held at the Veterinary Faculty in Leon (Spain), the chronology of events that determined the prohibition of the exports of meat and meat products from the United Kingdom due to the identification of a variant of the Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease represented by 10 atypical cases is considered.
The ways by which the bovine spongiform encephalopaty appeared are analysed and the scarce scientific information available about the possibility of its transmition to man is presented.
Prevention measures taken at the United Kingdom and recommended by international organizations, both for reduction of the incidence of the disease in cattle and to eliminate any possibility of transmission to man, are also examined.
Finally, some reflexions about this experience are also made.
