The Medical Examiner's Office of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government was established in 1947 to perform inspections and autopsies of unnatural deaths in 23 wards of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area.
Most of the cases at that time were infectious diseases and intoxications, and only these kinds of cases have shown a dramatic decrease in the last 48 years.
Today, approximately 70% of deaths are natural.
There are numerous cases of unusual deaths of unknown cause and accidents, which are mostly reported to scientific meetings.
Since the International Association of Forensic Science (IAFS) is scheduled to be held in Tokyo in 1996, I would like to introduce the historical aspects and current up-dated system of the Medical Examiner's Office of the Tokyo Metropolitan Govenment.
