Historical outline of mutagenesis.
Belgian Environmental Mutagen Society BEMS. Annual meeting. Mol BEL, 1994/12/07.
The different periods of the history of mutagenesis are reviewed originating at the beginning of the 20th century.
We distinguish 6 periods, comprising as a whole two main divisions, respectively before and after the world war II.
We focus on the most prominent results of significance for the future.
Induced mutations, first with ionizing radiations and then with chemicals have their origin before the war, but expanded after the war.
After 1965, we emphasize on the origin and development of environmental mutagenesis leading to Genetic Toxicology its aims, and its special methodology.
We attempt to identify some fields of great interest for future works.
Search for protection of man against environmental mutagens led to biomonitoring and surveillance of populations based, not only on long term epidemiological studies, but also investigations in the fast growing field of antimutagenesis.
All these researches will converge toward the control of environment as a whole.
However, mutagenesis should not only become an applied science, but should keep strong links with fundamental problems using a refined more molecular methodology.
