It is becoming increasingly important for anyone who uses hazardous chemicals in their manufacturing processes to understand the mass balances for these constituents.
Regulatory pressure, escalating liabilities and disposal costs, and the never-ending quest for ways to make more with less have made mass balance a top priority for everyone within the manufacturing complex.
Recent thinking about mass balance also suggests that frequent monitoring of emissions will allow better understanding and management of production processes and may even enable increased production without exceeding permit levels.
In an effort to accomplish this, some companies have begun to attempt mass balance in real-time.
This paper presents an approach to real-time mass balance using advanced information technologies developed by EG & G within its Integrated Solutions for the Environment group, a new information technology group that consolidates word-class expertise in manufacturing, instrumentation, systems integration, and environmental management to simultaneously improve environmental and manufacturing performance.
