To evaluate the performance of the Paediatric Day Case Unit over a period of 4 years, 1989-1993.
Day case unit register and individual case notes where necessary were scanned for relevant information.
Annual admissions on average were 572, drawn from general and various subspecialities of paediatrics.
There were very few instances where a day case had to be transferred to a general ward for prolonged observation.
The Day Case Unit is well suited for the paediatric population.
It is cost-effective and should be utilized to the full by more hospitals within our health system.
