    The use of ecological risk assessments in sediment management, in addition to generic sediment quality criteria, is gaining ground.

    The logical structure and availability of a number of risk assessment methods offer managers a powerful tool for making decisions based on rather rigid classification schemes.

    In the remediation of highly polluted sediments, site-specific risk assessments are being used, but further harmonization and standardization of the method should be made.

    The implementation of ecological risk assessment methods, including ecotoxicological monitoring, can improve decision making in sediment management.
