Fragmentation in health care is seen as being linked with an over-emphasis on the technical and a relative neglect of the personal aspects of treatment.
Patients themselves place a high priority on the quality of their relationships with practitioners.
A model of the process of treatment is proposed, incorporating aspects of the therapeutic relationship seen as important by patients as well as practitioners : mutuality, trust, care and challenge.
