The environmental situation in Baltic countries and their environmental management strategy.

This paper describes the current environmental situation in the Baltic countries particularly Lithuania using the data of fundamental research in tbe framework of Project ECOSLIT and local monitoring of some parameters : atmospheric and water pollution, distribution of radionuclides, monitoring of forest decline and human health conditions, its genetical and socioeconomic consequences.
Attention is paid to the perception of ecosystems exposed to atmospheric pollution : stress reaction and adaptation to new physical and chemical environment, also a new approach to environmental management strategy is described.
